Situated on the South Leeward side of Maui sits approximately 1800 acres of what is called “Makena”. Makena meaning “abundance” in Hawaiian is aptly named. Abundant in natural beauty and geological significance. Where the slopes of Hawaii’s largest dormant volcano meets the rocky lava coastline and offers areas of large sandy crescent shaped beaches with crystal clear waters. Big beach is one of the longest (about 2/3 of a mile long) and widest. The strong break offers some exciting boogie and skim boarding (be careful though as it can be rough!). By the way, this beach is great for morning walks in the deep sand. Amazing beauty and great exercise.

About a 5 min drive from Wailea, Makena is quiet and low key. Some of the islands most stunning homes reside in Makena. The off the beaten path quality attracts the worlds richest and/or famous people. Neighbors get a kick watching Clint Eastwood drive by in golf cart wearing a straw hat. Much of Makena is still unspoiled and many people would like to keep it that way. Having said that there are some notable new developments occurring in Makena. The latest development to grace near these shores is Makena Sunset. We recently took at tour of this Ultra Luxury 4 Condominium Gated Community. Located right across from Maluaka Beach with ocean views. Each unit listed at $10,250,000. As this Makena Sunset came on the market, Unit #4 went under contract.

There are a lot of changes and developments in the works that will be occurring in Makena. The old Prince Hotel which is now Makena Beach and Golf Resort Hotel will soon be a memory and according to the new developer/partner who is running the show now, Discovery Land Company says: “The 1,800-acre community will offer estate lots, beach club cottages, and luxury multi-family villas. Makena will also include a luxury boutique resort and village.” The site goes on to mention that there will be 36-holes of golf. It is slated to be a private resort club.
