Last week I attended a workshop for non profit groups on Maui. It was a workshop on “how to engage your board members”. I am Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation and therefore I felt it important to attend.
When I arrived at the workshop it struck me how many non-profit groups there are to keep Maui going. Non-profits that care for the sick, elderly, disabled, arts, music, dance, environment, service animals, animals, agriculture, healthcare and so much more are often taken for granted. There are so many services we don’t think about until we or a loved one needs it. We assume that someone will take care of it. Right? Wrong! In the era of budget cutting, the first to go are services we don’t consider critical. But they are critical. In order to have a healthy and thriving community, we must take care of the weakest among us and encourage the expression of art, music and dance. For example, watching the service animals go through so much training and knowing what a tremendous gift that that animal will be for someone, is astounding. Watching the passion that the trainers have for what they do is inspiring. It is this kind of true aloha that makes us thrive with compassion. It is what makes life on Maui so special!
This past Saturday was our 36th annual Visitors Industry Charity Walk. Maui raised more money per capita than any other island. Maui is “No Ka Oi!- the best”. Maui County raised $863,542, the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association reported. The nonprofit raising the most money was the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation with $90,008! Next time you consider making a gift, consider a donation to one of these non-profit charities that you feel is important to you.
Mahalo for your kokua! (Thank you for your help!)
